Gracy Singh, a simple middle-class girl from Punjab, began her career with humble ol'television. She became popular largely on account of her role in Sanjeev Bhattacharya's tele-serial 'Amaanat'. At that point of time, she was even rumoured to be seeing the show's director, Inder.

Gracy always bore the image of a quintessential traditional Indian girl more suited for a 'salwar-kameez' than a mini-skirt! And it's precisely this image that got her a break in Aamir Khan's ambitious home-production 'Lagaan'. The lady (Gauri) opposite Bhuvan (Aamir) was required to be a typical innocent rustic belle and Gracy suited the role aptly. 'Lagaan' became a big hit and Gracy saw her stocks soaring by default even though she was branded as 'behenji-ish' for commercial Indian cinema. In fact, one of the reasons Neha Dhupia had to replace Gracy in Harry Baweja's 'Qayamat' (opposite Ajay Devgan) was because the role required the heroine to sport a bikini and look glamorous, and Gracy would not look appropriate donning such a look.

Not many know that 'Lagaan' was not actually Gracy's launchpad. Earlier, she had done miniscule roles in Subhash Ghai's 'Taal' as Aishwarya Rai's friend, and also in Gulzar's 'Hu Tu Tu' opposite Nana Patekar.

'Lagaan' helped Gracy in bagging awards (for Best Debutante) and also a stream of commercial work - she did Honey Irani's 'Armaan' opposite Anil Kapoor, which bombed. Her next release, 'Gangaajal' opposite Ajay Devgan was a semi-hit and bagged rave reviews even though Gracy's role was nothing to talk about. Her most significant release after 'Gangaajal' was the hit, 'Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.', in which she essayed a doctor, and was cast opposite Sanjay Dutt. Once again, her character in the film was not a principal one, but she played it with sufficient confidence and ease.

Gracy's next release is N.R. Pachisia's 'Muskaan' (opposite Aftab) in which she is playing a "typical commercial heroine". Then there is also Ajay Phansekar's 'Yehi Hai Zindagi' where her character is that of a classical Indian dancer.
