By Vickey Lalwani ©2005 Bollyvista.com

Bobby Deol, the charmer has not been lucky at the marquee. Awaiting 'Barsaat' on August 19th, he speaks to Vickey Lalwani about his experiences in the film and lots more...

What is your forthcoming 'Barsaat' all about?
I play Arav who is ambitious enough to leave home so that he can better his life abroad. He goes abroad in his pursuit to become a top car designer. In his drive of realizing his ambition, he forgets his wife (Priyanka Chopra) and has another woman in his life (Bipasha Basu) that he meets in Cape Town. Sentimental by nature, Arav does not give a second thought when he hears about his father's illness. He rushes back home to be at his bedside. It's a very realistic film; it's a film which women audiences will identify with, it even deals with divorce and sacredness of marriage but at the same time it's not preachy.

The film has been delayed?
Not really. It was only announced earlier. But if you consider the length of time it took to be made, it was really fast. We started shooting in October 2004.
How was it working with Suneel Darshan?
I’ve known Suneel since many years. When he was making 'Lootere' with Sunny, I used to sit around on the sets. We used to sit and chat. Hence, there was a comfort level while doing the film. He has also chosen me for his next one 'Dosti' (Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor). I loved working with him. Since he himself is the producer, he puts everything behind his movie. He is very honest to his work, that's why he is successful more often than not.

Any particular scenes you won't forget?
Yup, at least one. There's a scene where Priyanka and I almost died. They got the rain from the stream flowing with the melted snow water. We almost froze to death.

How did you feel before taking up the role? Akshay Kumar was meant to do this role...
(Interrupts) Suniel came to me and clearly informed me that he was offering me the role, which Akshay was supposed to do. I told him that I had no issues as long as I had a chat with Akshay, 'coz Akshay is a good friend and I didn't want any misunderstandings with him. Were there any changes made when you stepped into Akshay's shoes? Akshay had shot for a song. That had to be reshot. But I don't thing that any changes in the script or role were made. At least not that I know of.
You worked with Bipasha in 'Ajnabee'. Any changes in her from then till now?
She has come a long way. She has no godfather in the industry and she has grown as an actress. She has become a star.

You have not been lucky in your career so far?
I agree, but I am not giving up. This is a passing phase. Nothing lasts forever.

You agree that you have made mistakes in your career?
Hmmm...not really. I would still say that I have not been lucky. I worked with great filmmakers whose end product didn't turn out well enough.

Shouldn't you have signed more films?
No. I never want to run from pillar to post. I signed some big banners, but what can I do if they didn't click at the box-office?
A dream project is coming up for you?
Yeah. Anil Sharma wants to direct my dad (Dharmendra), bhaiya (Sunny) and myself together. The subject is very emotional; it dwells upon a father's dream about his kids. It's tentatively titled 'Apne'.

What's your character in Suneel Darshan's 'Dosti'?
I play a rich guy living in a business family but there is no attachment amongst the members. They all are lost in their own world. The only anchor is his friend Akshay Kumar, who helps him to stabilize his life.

Do you take advise from your dad?
Yes, I do. He has always given valuable inputs. Frankly, I am quite nervous at the thought that I will face the camera with him in the same frame.

How would you describe yourself as a father?
(Laughs) At the risk of sounding boastful, I would say that I am a great father. And hey! Did you know that my eldest son loves to see my songs only and considers me to be the best actor in the business? (Smiles)
