Is director Karan Razdan in 'Girlfriend' (Ishaa Koppikar, Amrita Arora, Ashish Choudhary) making a subtle version of 'Fire' (Shabana Azmi, Nandita Das)? Then why does it seem so? How can a girl be caught in the crossfire of choosing whether she wants to spend the rest of her life with her boyfriend who would obviously marry her and probably give her kids, or her girlfriend who can neither marry her nor give her kids? What is that extra she is getting from her girlfriend which is sending her in a tizzy every time she sits down to think about these two people in her life?
But Karan Razdan is not giving it away. He claims that there are no hot scenes between the two girls, unlike in 'Fire'. Before we probe further, he himself says, "You have to catch the undercurrent. Nothing is going to come loud and clear."
How did he conceive this film? "Well, it's inspired by a real life incident I have seen in my life," he says.
How did he do the casting? He replies, "Well, Ashish had worked with Baweja in 'Qayamat' and I had liked his performance. Ishaa was also a part of 'Qayamat' and I particularly liked her aggressive body language, which was very essential for the character she plays in this film. As for Amrita, the day she walked into my office, I knew she was the best choice for the beautiful petite dame who finds herself on a sticky wicket." We took time in finalizing Amrita, though. We had tested a few girls before her, but I would not like to go on record saying who they are."
But before 'Girlfriend' which will hit the theatres on May 28 as per Razdan's plan, Razdan has his other film 'Hawas' (Tarun Arora, Meghna Naidu, Shaawar Ali) lined up. 'Hawas' releases March 12. The film deals with an extra-marital affair and is said to have some very bold scenes.
The other day, Mallika Sherawat (the 17 kisses girl from 'Khawish') told this writer that passion could be the best thing that can happen to a bored and lonely housewife. Is Meghna out to endorse on that?
We don't know why, but we get an uncanny feeling that Razdan is desperate to bounce back. Of late, he hasn't had too good time in Bollywood. He got unlucky when his 'Roshni' (Bikram Saluja-Milind Soman) for Ripples Entertainment got shelved. And what better way than to feed sex to this sex-starved nation!
Ironically, he dismisses off the other extra-marital affair film 'Husn' starring Shaawar Ali, Meghna Naidu, Meera Vasudevan and Gulshan Grover (which is currently being shot in Dubai) as someone trying to capitalize on the buzz that his film 'Hawas' has managed to create! Produced by Farah Ahmed (wife of late filmmaker Sultan Ahmed) and directed by debutante Ajeet Sinha (who assisted Inder Kumar and Kuku Kohli earlier), the film reminds one of 'Jism' (John Abraham, Bipasha Basu and Gulshan Grover)- because Meghna plays Grover's wife just like Bipasha did in 'Jism'.
