B.R. Chopra returns to hindi films with an all and all out family film BHAGHBAN with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini heading the multistarrer cast, which also includes Salman Khan and Mahima Choudhary. The songs have been much publicized, especially with the Amitabh "Holi" song on the soundtrack. All the songs have been composed by Aadesh Shrivastava. How will the music for this family entertainer fare?
Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik open up the album with an all and all out romantic number in Pehle Kabhi Na Mera Haal. Picturized on Salman Khan and Mahima Choudhary, Aadesh Shrivastava scores with a beautiful romantic number that will appease the masses, sticking to the tried and tested formula. The status of the song can only increase with each additional listen, and even the lyrics are sweet, romantic and simple, by Sameer.
Sudesh Bhonsle, singing for Amitabh Bachchan in the film, opens up Meri Makhna Meri Soniye in pure upbeat fashion. The background rhythms remind of a slowed down version of "SONA SONA" (Major Saab) but overall, a more romantic rhythm and lyrics suit the song. Alka Yagnik has a much smaller part of the song but still sounds heavenly in her part. The song itself belongs to Sudesh and his Amitabh-style presence and rendition.
An electronic new for Aadesh Shrivastava, Chali Chali Phir Chali is a club style song. Shrivastava lends a helping hand with the rendition along with Amitabh Bachchan, Alka Yagnik and Hema Sardesai. The majority of the song belongs to Amitabh, with Alka, Hema and Aadesh all filling into the background to bring together the chorus. Although Amitabh does not sound his usual self, his baritone still comes out loud and clear. Overall, a good number.
Hori Khele Raghuveera, the much publicized Holi number of the soundtrack, opens up with Sukhwinder Singh hitting the high notes before Amitabh takes the floor and runs off with the song itself. The disappointing part of the song is the obvious rehash of "RANG BARSE", another popular Amitabh Holi number. The introduction of Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan into the song though lift it into a great song, and everyone has a fun time rendering the song. However, the song itself belongs to Amitabh, as the song becomes a beautiful entry into the soundtrack and in the minds of music listeners everywhere!
Aadesh Shrivastava and Hema Sardesai return to the soundtrack for the second version of Chali Chali Phir Chali. Aadesh suits the song very well, but one cannot help but notice the man has a slight Kay Kay hangover. On purpose or by mistake, its very obvious in this manner. The song takes place at a high tension filled moment, with quick background rhythms and anxious music building up. Overall, a good timepass!
Amitabh Bachchan returns his powerhouse presence to the album with O Dharti Tarse Ambar Barse, the mandatory sad song in the soundtrack. Amitabh gives a few lines and then Richa Sharma renders the sad song in a melancholy tune. Overall, this 10 minutes song is a real waste of time.
Amitabh Bachchan comes back with a slowed and toned down number in Main Yahan Tu Wahan. His baritone takes over for parts of it, but we are surprised by the legend who gives a romantic rendition to this otherwise totally average song. Alka Yagnik gives an equally soulful and peaceful rendition to the song. However, top notch renditions does not pull the song out of the average category, and thus it will stay.
Udit Narayan and Sneha Pant open up the prayer song Om Jai Jagdish - Aarti and it is rendered beautifully by both of them. Overall, a very peaceful and beautiful number to take the album forward.
The final song on the soundtrack is the instrumental version of Meri Makhna Meri Soniye. Very nicely put together and a great way to round off the album.
The songs of BHAGHBAN are a mixed bag, and while the majority of the songs may take a few listens to truly be appreciated, the songs for the album are, nonetheless, very well put together, and will definitely serve the need of the movie once it releases. Overall, a decent soundtrack!
