Saas Bahu Aur Sensex

Saas Bahu Aur Sensex is the second film by Shona Urvashi. Her debut film, 'Chupke Se', starring Syed Zulfi, Masumeh and Rati Agnihotri had some lovely, soul touching music by multi-faceted, Vishal Bhardwaj with lyrics by Gulzar. Even though the film sank without a trace, the music was appreciated, so let us check out what the new bunch of composers, three to be precise, Randolph Correa, Blaaze and Bipin Panchal have to offer us music buffs.

New composer, Randolph Correa has been assigned the opening number of the album, 'Abhi Abhi Jo Tu Aayee Hai', which could be classified as a normal routine, love ballad but it's the singer, Javed Ali who takes the number to a higher level. Javed who epitomized love with his 'Jashne Bahara' (Jodhaa Akbar) gets to render another petal, soft romantic number and he is superb as always. The simple, flowing rhythm of the love ditty along with equally simple musical arrangements (guitar and beads in the background) makes for an interesting hear, though Pritam's trademark crooning, "o, o, o" takes one by surprise. And somewhat dilute the effect. Raqueeb Alam's lyrics are simple and effective although quite filmy at times.
Rocky Theme music, 'Eye Of The Tiger' inspired start along with rap and some cool, funky suspense filled music commences, 'What's Up India', a definite situational track that would be used in the background and with roll on credits. Blaaze, who is famous for rap does a three in one job, composer, writer and singer and is good in all the three department. The rhythm that he chooses is groovy and furiously paced and can double up as a nice promotional number. It can also be labeled as the title track with intermittent Hindi words like "Saas, Bahu, Sensex".

'Mujh Mein Nigahein Daal De' sees the return of composer Randolph Correa and the lyricist Raqueeb Alam in a sort of item or dance track . The singer Monica has a quite different sounding vocals (which appear harsh at times). She  tries to imitate Alisha and in parts she sounds like Usha Uthup. The number specially the start of the song is reminiscent of the sizzling dance tracks by Bindu, the dancing queen of the sixties and seventies. A number aimed to burn the dance floors may find few takers, but the video featuring the item girl Tanushree Dutta (along with Masumeh) may well become popular if promoted extensively.
The English version of 'Mujh Mein Nigahien Daal De' is a better one and more in sync with the musical arrangements and super fast rhythm. Monica does well here though she overdoes the 'Ooh and aahs' part in her over enthusiasm and sounds funny, to say the least.

The album comes to a close with 'Mithri Mithri', a quintessential 'Bhangra' laced dance track composed by Bipin Panchal. The song commences with the famous 'Bhangra' rhythm (used by Anu Malik in 'Chori Chori Chupke Chupke' 'Karde Dhamaal Punjabi'). The rap portions as well as the Punjabi ones are interesting, albeit both have a heard before feel to it. But it's the 'antara' that is a letdown as the song becomes more of a romantic number rather than keeping up the celebration and festive spirit of the song alive. Some may find this a unique combo of "Bhangra romance". New singer Krishna Beurra has pleasant sounding vocals. Raqueeb Alam comes in as the lyricist once again and pens a nice, befitting the situation composition and we have the director herself, Shona Urvashi who write the Sindhi lyrics, note the repeated 'Jhule Laal' in the song

On the whole, 'Saas Bahu Aur Sensex' is an album that has nothing worthwhile to offer, except to an extent 'Mithri Mithri' and Javed Ali's romantic number "Abhi abhi To Aayee Ho.". It is nowhere near the level of Shona Urvashi's 'Chupke Se'. It is simply a case of too many cooks spoil the broth!
