Movies with action and war/terrorism as a central theme don't normally boast of great music (with a few exceptions like 'Border', 'Refugee' and
'Maachis') and the most recent example being the ordinary compositions of 'Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo'. Let us check out the music of Ajay-Bobby-Tanishaa-Nandana starrer 'Tango Charlie The Heart Of A Hero’.
The album opens with another 'Oadhni' song but this time by Anand Raj Anand and not by the 'Chunri/Oadhni' expert Himesh. The comparisons with chartbuster 'Oadhni odh ke ' from 'Tere Naam' or even ' Odhli Chunariya ' from 'Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya' are inevitable and on that count the song 'Odhni odhali piya tere naam ki, Aisi bani main teri jaise Radha bani Shyam ki' pales in comparison. It is an above average fare, though quite hummable and sung very well by Mahalaxmi and Udit. One must add that Ajay and Nandana Sen (on whom the song has been picturised) manage to bring down the song even lower, especially Ajay with his pathetic steps and lethargic movements.

On first listening to 'Ek diwani ladki ne ishara kar diya' one gets the feeling that this is an oft-repeated tune dating back to the good old days of Kishore Kumar. But on subsequent hearings, credit must be given to Anand Raj Anand for making it quite unique. It is a soft romantic and yet foot tapping number (picturised on Bobby and Tanishaa) that becomes even more likeable and enjoyable due to Shreya Ghoshal and Shaan's excellent singing.
'Kya batoon dilruba' has lyrics by Javed Akhtar and music by Anu, who has always said that he does not like sharing music credits. One must agree that he is right, for he has made a 'khichdi' of a song, mixing soft gentle rhythmic music and hard rock drum sounds and the results are just ok. The only redeeming factor in his song are the lyrics by Javed Akhtar, which successfully convey the confused state of mind of a lover, who cannot convey his feelings in a very apt manner. Kudos to Javed Akhtar for making this average fare better. Udit and Alka are as good as ever.

The instrumental 'Oadhni Odhali' is nothing outstanding.
Just as one begins to feel that this album does not connect with the theme of 'Tango Charlie Heart Of A Hero', Anand Raj Anand comes up with a composition that is not only soul stirring but also heart wrenching. Sonu Nigam has rendered this song to perfection. One always knew that Anand Raj Anand was a good lyricist after 'Jahan paon mein payal, Haath mein kangna ' from 'Pardesi Babu', but here he has surpassed himself with the lyrics 'Tukde tukde karke maa ke dil ke, Hamne daal diya hai khud ko hi mushkil mein '. Very touchy and philosophical. This song coveys to the listeners what the makers of the movie wish to convey to them and that is the worthlessness of war and terrorism and why wars are fought in the name of religion, caste and country. Anand Raj says it brilliantly and after 'Border' these are the best lyrics on a similar theme.
The 'Kya Bataoon Dil Ruba ' instrumental is much better than the 'Oadhni Oadhli' with much better orchestra arrangements.

'Dheere Dheere' is a soft romantic, melodious composition by Anand Raj Anand. This time the lyrics ' Dheere dheere palke uthana, Dheere se palke jhukana' are decent but do not stand out. The vocals by Sonu and Shreya are routine.
The lyrics of last track 'Akkad Te Bakkad Te' take inspiration from a game that children play in India - 'Akkad bakkad bambe bo, Assi nabbe poore sau!' and the lyrics start with the opening lines of the game. Kailash Kher starts the song in his usual 'Sufi' style but the song changes as Udit and Ganjawala take over (along with Vijay Prakash). The song becomes more of a Punjabi folk and inspirational-cum-camaraderie type number. Yes, the inspiration of 'Chakka chakka charkha chale' from 'Maachis' looms large on the song.
On the whole 'Tango Charlie The Heart Of A Hero' is an average to decent album that has one outstanding and one good composition and will have to rely on the success of the movie for its own success.
Overall Rating: 6/10
