If you have missed the A.R. Rahman of 'raga and rhythm' in 'Tehzeeb' and found him too classy, than there is good news - he is back with 'Lakeer - Forbidden Lines'.
There are many firsts in this album. Rahman is composing for the first time in a Sunny Deol movie and this is choreographer Ahmad Khan's first directorial venture.
There are a total of eight tracks with two being repeated.
The album opens with 'Nachley' a certain chartbuster from Daler Mehndi, who despite the recent controversies shows why he is the king of Punjabi Pop in India. Daler's vocals are excellent and so are the lyrics by Mehboob. There is Kunal Ganjawala for company who is good but fades in comparison to Daler.
The second track 'Shehzade' by Kunal Ganjawala has the typical Rahman arrangement. The lyrics are ordinary and the song passable.
'Paighaam', the third track, is a masterpiece from the maestro. Shaan amazes you with the range and tenor of his voice, Kavita is as efficient as ever. This track will grow on you as you hear it again and again. It reminds one of Rahman's 'Roja' days.
'Offho Jalta Hai' has the legendary Asha Bhosle with Sonu Nigam. The song is lifted by Asha's ageless voice and Sonu gives her good company. Still, it is not in the league of either 'Nachley' or 'Paighaam'.
The much talked about 'Rozana' by the pop group 'Viva', lives up to the expectations. The beats are lively and the singing very different and professional. It is certainly better than many of the recent 'Disco' hits and it won't be a surprise if it becomes the party hit of 2004.
'Sadiyaan', the last track, has the talented Hariharan, Udit Narayan and Mahalaxmi rendering the song. It is a really different number, sort of a family cum situational song, and once again Rahman experiments with fusion and rhythms. The track once again will grow, with repeated hearings, no wonder that the leading lady of the movie, Nauheed Cyrusi, has praised the number.
'Paighaam' and 'Nachley' are repeated but unfortunately the versions are the same.
The album is a must buy for Rahman fans. There are three exceptional tracks - 'Nachley', 'Paighaam' and 'Rozana' and the music of 'Lakeer - Forbidden Lines' will soon scorch the charts with these three numbers vying with each other, to become the numero uno.
Rating 7/10
