One rainy afternoon,
Six years later…
Two estranged lovers met…
To play the game of words.

The four lines above summarize the essence of Raincoat, Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh's first Hindi film. It brings the immortal romance of Radha-Krishna to mind, in this sweet yet poignant story of two star-crossed lovers.

A Bihari television businessman named Manoj (Ajay Devgan) finds himself down-and-out, reduced to begging his friends for money, in order to start a new business venture. But no matter what he does, the thoughts about the love of his life Niru (Aishwarya Rai) is always with him. Unfortunately, six years earlier Niru went along with her mother's wishes and married a successful entrepreneur, instead of Manoj.
One day, he musters up the courage to pay a visit on her. The monsoon season is upon them, leaving Manoj lurking outside Niru's house in his raincoat, (thus the title of the film) not sure whether or not he should actually go through with his plans. Courage gets the better of him once again and the two ex-lovers finally meet.

In this second encounter, they rediscover themselves against the passage of time. The rainy afternoon sets the mood for the meeting and the game of words the two play with each other. Their grief-stricken love story is told in flashbacks as each lover's current anguish is also delicately and painfully laid bare.

Will anything else evolve, now that their paths have crossed again after so much time? Can anything evolve given the circumstances? The answers can only be revealed by going to the theater and watching it for ourselves. Raincoat is set to release by the end of December.
