Farah Khan strikes again. After her debut film Main Hoon Naa, she back again with another spoof/tribute/rehash called Om Shanti Om.
It is the 70's in the Bollywood film industry. Om (SRK) is a junior artiste and Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone) is the reigning star. He is hopelessly in love with her. Om's mother (Kirron Kher) is also a film extra and she has full faith that her son would one day make it as a superstar. Because of Mukesh (Arjun Rampal), who is a film producer, both Om and Shanti lose their lives. Om is reborn again as OK and is a superstar now! He wants justice for his and Shanti's death.
The plot, hackneyed as it may sound, is definitely not what makes this film a thorough entertainer. It is the King Khan's exuberant charm and the endless gags with references to everyone from Manoj Kumar to Sooraj Barjatya to Govinda! This film makes no false pretences of being an exceptional piece of art. It promises to be an entertainer and does just that. The endless cameos from almost every single actor in the Hindi film industry is a treat for any film buff. Also not to be missed is the song at the end of the film featuring all the technicians!

Shreyas Talpade is very good as Om's friend. Javed Sheikh as Om's father in his rebirth is average. Arjun Rampal is wooden as usual but since his character doesn't have much scope for performance, it works well! Kirron Kher is good as the "filmy" mother and Bindu is impressive in her minuscule role. Deepika Padukone makes an impressive debut and Shah Rukh Khan proves why he is the true superstar of Indian cinema!
Dialogues by Mayur Puri are very good. Vishal & Shekhar compose the wonderful songs. Cinematography by Manikandan is good. Art Direction by Sabu Cyril is excellent. Background music score by Sandip Chowta is apt and Shirish Kunder wonderfully edits this film. Farah Khan directs this potboiler very well.
Ask no questions about logic and you won't be disappointed. This is one true holiday, family movie!
**** (Four Stars)
