The director of 'Parineeta' and innumerable commercials is back with a plot, which is as old as Indian Cinema itself.
Badki (Rani Mukherji) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma) are two sisters who live in Benaras with their parents (essayed by Anupam Kher and Jaya Bachchan.) The family is in desperate need of money and the elder sister, Badki fails to bag any job, due to the lack of her educational qualifications. Out of desperation she turns to prostitution. After a while Chutki gets a job and comes to live in the city with her sister and things get complicated for Badki.
Films with such storylines have been done numerous times before, including the Mumtaaz starrer, 'Aaina'. The plot is predictable from the word go and is a weep fest stretching to three hours. After knowing all this, is there any reason why a sane person would still want to commit hara-kiri?

Rani Mukherjee cries well ... sorry acts well! Abhishek Bachchan is good in his extended cameo, but both of them fail to exude any chemistry. On the other hand, the chemistry between Konkona Sen Sharma and Kunal Kapoor is very good.
Performances Jaya Bachchan, Anupam Kher and the supporting cast of Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, Tinnu Anand, Sushant Singh, Murli Sharma, Ninad Kamat and Hema Malini (in a cameo) are good.
Music by Shantanu Moitra is average, cinematography is good and the editor seems to have fallen asleep resulting in the film with such a thin premise being so long!
Directorially, Pradeep Sarkar disappoints.
