This film is a definite deviation from the regular mush and candyfloss films, which are churned out from YRF. They had produced Kabul Express earlier, which was also not their regular sort of film, but YRF had come into the picture after most of the film was complete. This is the first plot driven film which they have backed from the word go and hopefully many more such ones will soon follow!
In the hockey World Cup finals against Pakistan, Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) misses a penalty shot, which results in his team losing the match. Disgraced he returns to his hometown. Seven years later he returns with an ambition of doing the almost impossible task of getting the neglected Indian Women's hockey team to win the world cup. The task is uphill but he does manage to become the coach of the team to start with. How he unites the hooligan team members who come from every nook and corner of the country and leads them to victory forms the rest of the story.
This is a Shah Rukh Khan film all the way. He turns up with another restrained performance after Swades. It's a treat for all his fans!
Jaideep Sahani, who had earlier written Jungle, Company, Khosla ka Ghosla and Bunty Aur Babli has beautifully woven this feel good emotional tale into a screenplay.

Cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is very good but one did wish that the editing be a tad better. Also musically apart from the title track, there is not much to talk about.
Amongst the star cast apart from the Shah Rukh Khan, the film mostly features newcomers.
Previously a dialogue editor in the US, Shimit Amin turned film editor with "Where's the party yaar" and "Bhoot". After successfully debuting directorially with Ab Tak Chappan, he directs Chak De! India and also does a very good job at it! This movie is no classic but is worth a watch even if it is to see the state of affairs of India's national game, hockey and to laud the brave efforts of Yrf in backing such a project!
(***1/2) Three and half stars.
