Dhoom 2

'Dhoom 2' is a visual delight. The film moves from Mumbai to Goa, Rajasthan, Namibia and finally to Brazil. Some portions of the film seem straight out of a Hollywood film.

This slick action flick has awesome stunts and action (Hrithik's first robbery in a moving train in Namibia, robbery of a precious diamond from a museum in Mumbai, and the theft in Jamnagar), but unfortunately they're all placed in the first half. But you won't be disappointed if you watch it as pure escapist fare. The film really transports the viewers into a different world.

Now for the story. Ali (Uday Chopra) is now ACP Jai Dixit's (Abhishek Bachchan) right hand man.

Aryan (A) played by Hrithik Roshan is a hi-tech international thief who leaves his signature (A) at the scene of every crime. He also leaves clues indicating the venue and date of his next crime. After pulling off a series of impossible thefts all over the world, his next target is Mumbai in India.

The case is given to ACP Jai and Ali. Helping them solve the case is ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), Jai's college mate.

(A) meets Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a petty local but clever thief. They enter into a partnership. There's a slight twist in the story here. The climax is bound to leave the audience with a happy feeling.

While the first half is a cat and mouse game between A and Jai-Shonali, the second half focuses more on two love stories (Hrithik-Ash, and Uday-Bipasha). This makes the second half seem pale in comparison to the first half.

The revolver sequence between Hrithik and Ash is superb. Don't be surprised to see the two in a smooch scene. Their costumes and styling are superb. The two sequences showing Hrithik and Abhishek talking to each other (once when Abhishek does not know Hrithik's identity while the other when he does) are both brilliant.

'Dhoom 2' is Hrithik's film all through. He looks convincing as the thief and is the real star of the film. Hrithik has managed to overshadow Abhishek effortlessly not just in the acting department but also in the looks department.

Now the music. Barring the 'Krazy Kiya Re', and the title track, the score is very mediocre. Even the choreography of these songs is outstanding.

Special mention has to be made of the visual effects, and Allan Amin's action sequences and stunts.

Full marks to the cinematography. It's very international.

Some of the dialogues are good (especially Uday Chopra's) but some find Aishwarya's a little irritating (her tendency to say 'like'). But her tanned and bold look is completely different from what she's done before.

Bipasha is good as the cop as well as the lively twin sister. But whatever happens to her cop act once the twin enters the frame in the second half of the film?

Uday Chopra is good in a few scenes. Rimi Sen is there in just a couple of scenes.

'Dhoom 2' is a bit of a disappointment with a pacy, impressive first half and a slower second half but on the whole is sure to create real 'dhoom' at the box-office.

*** (Three Stars)
