Kyon Ki

This is very unlike a Priyadarshan film in recent times. 'Kyon Ki' is like a long joy ride that ends in tragedy. It's unfair! The audience is bound to leave the theatres with a bad taste in their mouths. A film should make the audience go home feeling happy unless the reason for the sad ending is truly justified, which 'Kyon Ki' doesn't.

Anand (Salman Khan) is in love with Maya (Rimii Sen). How he woos her and finally gets her to give him the nod is quite funny. Maya is always playing a prank on him. Anand and Maya plan to marry, but Maya's pranks lead Anand to throw her into a swimming pool on their engagement day, not knowing that she can't swim. Surprise, surprise, surprise, Maya really dies!

A shocked and completely broken down Anand loses his mental balance and is hospitalized. He is also declared as a killer. The extremely old-fashioned army doctor, Dr. Khurana (Om Puri), treats his patients in a rather cruel manner. This is surprising, considering it's a private nursing home.
Initially, his daughter, Dr. Tanvi (Kareena Kapoor), behaves in the same way but has a change of heart later. Dr. Sunil (Jackie Shroff) has always shared a special bond with Anand and his family. Anand's family was instrumental in making him a doctor.

Dr. Tanvi takes up Anand's case and treats him with a lot of care and compassion. Tanvi too follows the same course and eventually falls in love with him. So does Anand.

It would have been a happy ending film but drama has to be created. So the father is against the match. The bit where Salman forgets Maya and falls in love with Tanvi looks unreal.

Unfortunately the film ends on a sad note, something that could have been avoided. This could be a major reason for the film not working. Cut to the sections before this. It's very cute with lots and lots of genuinely funny moments. At times it takes a romantic twist but the humour is there in almost all the scenes. The dialogues are funny. However, there's nothing unpredictable about the film too except the climax.
The film lacks punch somehow. At times it also seems a little old-fashioned, so count the youth out of this. Given the festive season too, its chances seem quite bleak. But Salman fans may lap it up. Of the songs, 'Dil Keh Raha Hai' sounds very melodious.

But this is Salman Khan's film. He seems to have put his heart and soul into it. Also he seems tailor made for this role. It's fun to watch him behave like a child, sometimes sweet at times naughty. The actor has truly shed all his inhibitions and gotten into the character.

Kareena Kapoor looks and behaves in a natural way, for a change. None of those silly clothes and pouts or attitude. She looks good in her starched cotton saris with very little makeup. Rimii Sen makes up for the lack of glamour in the film. She is good in a brief role. Jackie Shroff is likeable. Sunil Shetty is wasted in a brief role. Om Puri is perfect. Manoj Joshi is loud but fun. Watch this film if you love tragedy.
