Beautiful, upbeat, fashion conscious, and voted one of the most sexiest women in the world by Maxim Magazine. Who are we talking about? None other than the black-eyed glamour queen herself, Urmila Matondkar. She's come a long way from her childhood acting days in Masoom and Kalyug. But has she always been at the top of her game?
According to most sources, no, not until her career was saved by director Ram Gopal Varma in 1995 with the smash hit, Rangeela. Urmila played Mila, opposite Aamir Khan and Jackie Shroff. A film which also put two hit songs, Rangeela Re and Tanha Tanha in her pocket. Since then she has worked under RGV for several other box-office hits which have won her accolades; namely, Satya, Kaun, and Judai.
Released this weekend is another of RGV and Urmila's collaborations, the supernatural thriller, Bhoot.
This too real horror film will keep you riveted to your seat. The character of Swati proves to be her most difficult and challenging roles to date. Ready for release later this year is another RVG film entitled Perfect, with Ms. Matondkar as its leading lady. Still in post-production are Tahzeeb and Ek Haseena thi, under direction of Khalid Mohamed and Shreeran Raghavan respectively.
Her name is synonymous with good cinema, but how does Urmila feel about herself and her career?
"I've always considered myself very confident, but somewhat introverted. I especially felt like an outsider when (against the film industries taboo beliefs) I cut my hair. As far as her career goes, she comments, "Growth is important to me. I've always chosen to do the things everyone else was afraid to do." Despite her ten past film flops, she was not and is not deterred. "I've never failed as an artiste in any of my films." |
