The 26-year old Aftab Shivdasani started out as a model at a very young age and did a number of commercials, even as a child. He was chosen up by Ram Gopal Varma to play the role of a young boy besotted with a heavenly star (Urmila) in 'Mast'. The film did not fare well but Aftab became branded as the typical boy-next-door and was picked up for a number of films thereafter.
He featured in Ramu's production 'Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega' (a comedy) directed by E. Niwas, which didn't fare too well either. His first semi-hit of sorts was Vikram Bhatt's 'Kasoor' (opposite Lisa Ray), which did do well thanks to its throwaway price. The music of 'Kasoor' also fared well and it was for the first time that Aftab played a negative role.
Aftab was penciled in by some of Bollywood's biggest makers for their projects but sadly for him, the films fared abysmally and neither did he find appreciation for his work - Boney Kapoor ('Koi Mere Dil Se Pooche' opposite debutante Esha Deol), Rajiv Rai ('Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat' opposite Keerti Reddy and Arjun Rampal), Tips Films ('Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai' opposite Amisha Patel), Vikram Bhatt ('Footpath' opposite Bipasha Basu, Emraan Hashmi and Rahul Dev), Prawaal Raman/RGV ('Darna Mana Hai').
Some of the smaller and tackier films that he did only eroded his fortune more: Vimal Kumar's 'Suno Sasurjee' (opposite Amisha Patel) and A.Muthu's 'Pyaasa' (opposite Yukta Mookhey).
