Sunny Deol |
If his father Dharmendra remains the ultimate He-man of Hindi cinema, then Sunny Deol is the undisputed king of action in this age. He gave a new meaning to action films with his deadly punches. So much so, that in a film, when he goes to Pakistan and single handedly bashes up its entire military force, people believe that he is the only hero who can do it. Any other hero in his place doing all that would have looked childish.
There is a softer side of this tough man that he amply showed in films like 'Betaab', 'Dillagi' and 'Apne'. He has such magnetic persona that he could come in a special appearance in 'Damini' and still sweep the film away. Here, he speaks on his new film 'Kaafila' and future plans. Over to Sunny …
What made you to do a film for a relatively new director like Ammtoje Maan?
If you take a look at my career you will notice that I have never given much thought on whether the director is new or an established name. It is the subject that matters to me.
What was so appealing about 'Kaafila'?
It is a tale of people who want to leave their motherland in search of a decent life abroad. In the pursuit, they are ready for illegal immigration and the film reveals a dark side of this situation, which is a universal problem. More than educated people, it is the unskilled workers who suffer the most. It is a very touching and serious topic.
So you are helping illegal migrants or you are also one of the victims?
I am helping victims of illegal migration. After 'Gadar' ... Zee Network has taken the distribution rights of the film.
Do you expect that 'Kaafila' will turn out to be as big a hit as 'Gadar'?
My problem is that I am generally unable to judge how a film is going to fare. A couple of times, films have fared good and beyond my expectations. There are instances when films have shaped up so badly that you know that they are not going to succeed. Ethically, you do not speak about such films.
You appear to be someone who generally never reveals much excitement at the success of your films?
What is the point in that? We are in the industry where people do not wait for the week to be completed. Just on the first day first show on Friday they declare the results of the film. Frankly speaking, we do not celebrate the success of various films. Rather, we are always waiting to celebrate their failure. |
