Playback singer Mahendra Kapoor debuted under Naushad in 'Sohni Mahiwal' |
‘Sohni Mahiwal’ had a first to boast of - Mahendra Kapoor's first song "Chaand chhupaa aur tare duube raat ghazab kii aaii" under Naushad's baton. The song was among the most popular ones from the film and Mahendra Kapoor was immediately christened Rafi's clone. But somewhere along the line, people also felt that there was something lacking in his voice and though a good alternative, he was no substitute for Rafi himself, who had gems like "Terii mehfil teraa jalwaa terii suurat dekh lii", "Aane waale ko aanaa hogaa", "Iid kaa din tere bin hai phiikaa", both duets with Lata; "Duniyaa hai isii kaa naam kahiin" and "Aaj galiyon mein terii aayaa hai diwaanaa teraa". Despite all of the songs being very pleasant to listen to, the film's failure also meant that the songs lost in the popularity charts sooner than they would/should have.
‘Kohinoor’, on the other hand was a run away success. Sohni Mahiwal's Bharat Bhushan was no match for the acting prowess of Kohinoor's Dilip Kumar, who had earlier also been given a silver jubilee in a similar (read comic) role with Meena Kumari in ‘Aazaad’. ‘Kohinoor’ had ten songs. The most popular among them being "Madhuban mein raadhikaa naache re", (Rafi & Aamir Khan) two Rafi duets with Lata - "Do sitaaron kaa zamiin par hai milan aaj kii raat" and "koii pyaar kii dekhe jaaduugarii" and the Asha Bhosle solo "Jaaduugar qaatil". |
