Rituparna Sengupta |
This outstanding young actress from Calcutta has made a niche for herself in the world of Indian cinema. A multifaceted performer, she is also an able dancer and writes as well. Her versatile performances have earned her accolades in the state as well as nationally. She has won in 1995: Bharat Nirman Award, in 1996: Kalakaar Award, Kazi Nazrul Islam Birth Centenary Award, in 1998: 42nd National Film Festival of India Award for Best Actress (film-Dahan), (she has bagged the biggest award for any actress in the county within five years of stepping into films. Which is not unique, but pretty rare) in 2000: Anandalok Ujala Award for Best Actress for Dahan, Anandalok Ujala Award for Best Actress for Attiya Sajan, The Bengal Film Journalists Association (BFJ) Award for Best Actress.
Rituparna, the cat-eyed beauty from Raja Basanta Roy Road, stepped into films with a pretty aggressive role that had plenty of negative shades. That was in Prabhat Roy's Shwet Patharer Thala, with Aparna Sen the heroine. The film won the national award for the best Bengali film that year. Rituparna has made a name for herself in Bangladesh and her Indo-Bangladesh co-productions have all been hits, both in Bengal and in Bangladesh. She has begun writing a column for Anandalok, narrating her experiences of the people, the films, even the environment, culture, et al. Her writing is easy to read, her language being free of intellectual pretensions -- simple and straight. We had the opportunity to speak to this versatile and brilliant actress on the sets of her latest film in Bollywood 'UNS'. Excerpts as follows: |
