Interview: Shyan Munshi

Shyan Munshi
He was liked in 'Jhankaar Beats', but the sea has not been smooth for him thereafter. Bollywood is not an easy place to be in. At times, it is difficult to figure out what works- talent, hard work, PR, luck, or a combination of all four. After joining the 'Red Carpet', he claims that better days lie ahead.

Excerpts from a tête-à-tête with Shyan Munshi:

Whasssup?
I am signed up with 'Red Carpet', which is a division of 'Popcorn Entertainment Limited', the company owned by Suniel Shetty. They are managing my work and career. I am back in India, primarily because I want to get into films. Last year, I spent major time in England doing fashion modeling. 'Red Carpet' being a management company, will be managing my career from here on.

Could you elaborate on that?
They would help me get roles, decide which roles I should take up and which I should refuse, get me stage shows, build my image in the film industry, etc. Considering the fact that I come from a family of doctors in Calcutta, I am neither a star-son nor backed by a godfather. I need somebody to advice me. Professional help by a management company is proving to be very valuable.

Do you mean that the association with 'Red Carpet' has started paying dividends?
Tremendously. I have bagged two films recently, but it would be a little premature to talk about them now; let the producer make a formal announcement first.

Rewind. How did 'Jhankaar Beats' happen?
Well, I have been modeling in India for the past 5 years and have done some music videos, which thankfully did very well. Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC) called me (pauses).

Go on...
And they wanted me for a TV serial. I politely refused. I told them that I was game if they were making a film. And the next thing I knew was that they had selected me for 'Jhankaar Beats'.

And what happened to that TV serial?
I don't think that it was made.

'Jhankaar Beats' didn't do too badly. Why didn't you get more offers post 'Jhankaar Beats'?
I did, but I wasn't happy with the kind of work I was offered. Either the roles were not meaty or the production house was not big enough.

In retrospect, do you think that a launch as a solo hero would have been better than 'Jhankaar Beats' where you had to share the spotlight with two other guys (Rahul Bose, Sanjay Suri)?
'Jhankaar Beats' was a good launch. No complaints. A launch in a solo film puts tremendous expectations on the debutant.

In the industry of beautiful faces and testosterone-testing bodies, how are you going to avoid the temptations?
I have a steady girlfriend Teeya Rai Chaudhary. She is a part of Bollywood. She was a part of the cast in Ram Gopal Varma's 'Darna Mana Hai'. She is doing Varma's forthcoming 'Vaastu Shastra'. Plus, she is doing Gurinder Chaddha's 'Bride and Prejudice' (costarring Aishwarya Rai, Namrata Shirodkar). I have found my true love and I don't need to stretch out my hands, here and there.
