Ananya Dutt
Ananya Dutt was just another model struggling to get a toehold in the cut-throat world of modeling in Mumbai, till she got selected to star in rock star Mick Jagger's documentary on contemporary India. Life, since then, changed drastically.

Today, her first project as a co-directing and producer 'God Only Knows' sees the light of day- a film she has been hands on with the theatre man Bharat Dabholkar, for their company 'Why Not'. Ananya is the Vice-President of the company.

For your info, she was the girl with Salman Khan and Suniel Shetty in the Thums-Up ad; today she has done 120 ads! Plus, she has worked on stage with Dabholkar for nearly three-and-half years. Yes, she is a bundle of talent.

Whether she makes it in films, only time will tell.

In her office at Khar (a Western suburb in Mumbai), the shapely beautiful female chatted up with Vickey Lalwani. Excerpts:

Nervous or excited on the eve of the release?
A bit of both (laughs).

I understand. But tell me, how did 'God Only Knows' happen?
One fine day, Bharat and I decided to make a feature film. And we didn't spend too much of time thinking about ifs and buts. We believed in ourselves and went ahead.

Uh, huh?
We decided to cast mostly those whom we knew. Two reasons, mainly. One, this film is a very elaborate subject. Two, Bharat has a firm belief that the script is the star, he believes that most of the films today flop because they move away from the story.

Why didn't you take up the central role, which has been done by Sharbani Mukherjee? 'Why Not' is your company. You had all the authority in the world.
I could have. But I was co-directing as well as producing the film. The film being a totally different subject, something that has never been attempted on Indian screen before, required lots of work. Putting together such a film is a big task. Plus, the costumes, which you see every character donning in my film, were not easy to get. And of course, I was also a part of the creative team. I was headlong into all these things. It wouldn't have been fair to the project if I had insisted that I wanted to hog the limelight. So I did only two dance numbers- one comes in the beginning and the other comes in the end- but I had my space. Mind you, my dance numbers were a part of the original script. I have certainly not pushed myself into the film.
