Sounds unbelievable that you will be assisting Aparna Sen on 'Gulel'?
(Smiles) I'm so excited! It's going to be such fun!
But being on the sets and assisting means doing all the dirty work?
I know! That's what's going to be fun!
Do you ever relax?
I wish I could! I don't think it's in my genes or so my husband (Javed Akhtar) tells me! I'm really waiting for a time when I can throw my feet up and chill!
In Sai Paranjpe's 'Saaz' you played a singer. So how different is that character from Rukhsana Jamal in 'Tehzeeb'?
You're right. In 'Saaz', I was a singer. Here, I'm a diva! (Laughs) Rukhsana is a ghazal singer, typically ambitious, flamboyant and one who has kept pace with the changing times. The film talks about her problems with her elder daughter, Tehzeeb, played by Urmila.
You were the oldest on the sets! How did that feel?
It was a different experience altogether working with such a young batch - Urmila, Dia, Arjun. Especially Urmila because we've done 'Masoom' together when she was a kid. It's unimaginable how fast kids grow, hai na? In a way, it was a learning experience of sorts. This generation is so much more wired with things and life.
Khalid mentioned that you'll fought like crazy on the sets of 'Tehzeeb'!
Oh yes! I had numerous reservations about doing 'Tehzeeb'. He's used 'Autumn Sonata' as a starting point. I had to be entirely convinced about my role and the film. It took Khalid long to convince me. At times, we fought and argued like crazy. I thought the film would never get made at this rate!
What's next?
Mahesh Dattani's English film 'Morning Raaga', and a film on Begum Akhtar's life being written by Javed Siddiqui. |
