The latest issue of 'Variety' has reviewed UTV's smash hit, 'Rang De Basanti'. While renowned critic Derek Elley, who reviewed the film in London, finds the "climax disengaging at a personal, professional level", he has given the movie an overall thumbs up praising the performances of Aamir Khan ("Likeable perfs by most of its leads....Aamir Khan is charming in a considered way as the playboy DJ.") and Alice Patten ("Alice Patten, 25, makes a delightfully fresh impression as Sue, and handles her Hindi dialogue with aplomb...").
Elley adds that "tech credits are of high order" and that the film is "an ambitious melding of history, politics, romance and patriotism within the parameters of a commercial Hindi movie." Commendably, he has summed up 'Rang De Basanti' as "a largely successful attempt to push the Bollywood envelope".
For the record, UTV's 'Rang De Basanti', after its fourth weekend has nearly touched GBP 700,000 in the UK and is marching into its fifth week with the same vigour, despite the new start, 'Taxi No.9211', on 24th. Despite being released on just 43 prints, 'Rang De Basanti' has surpassed the performance of Aamir Khan's previous 'The Rising' in less than a month of release. 'The Rising', apparently, saw an exposure of 90+ prints in the UK. |
