'Rang De Basanti', a UTV Motion Pictures co-production with Rakeysh Mehra Productions, has collected 22.8 crores worldwide gross box office, all India gross being 14.82 crores in its first four days of release. The film has won universal appreciation in India as well as abroad, cutting across all segments of audiences.
'Rang De Basanti' has received overwhelming audience response in all the film distribution territories and it's been some time since a film has met with pan Indian positive response, in multiplexes and stand alone theatres alike. The first weekend collections and the positive audience reaction are strongly indicating that 'Rang De Basanti' will be the first major hit of 2006.
'Rang De Basanti' has also taken off with a flying start the world over and set new precedents, having broken box-office records in key overseas markets.
In the Gulf, the Aamir Khan - starrer notched a staggering 1,080,012 Dirhams in 5 days on 17 prints, making it one of the highest per print averages for a Bollywood title.
In Australia, the film did 81,367 AUD in 3 days, which is the third largest opening for any Bollywood film there ever. The film is yet to open in two cities.
In Singapore, there have been 4,700 admissions so far, taking the 3 – day gross to USD 31,000.
In the U.K., the limited two-day preview performances did GBP 29,641 on 20 sites, and on 38 sites from Friday January 27th, the opening weekend took GBP 220,452, making it among the highest ever opening for any Bollywood title in the preceding year beating Aamir's own The Rising and other biggies such as 'Waqt', 'Salaam Namaste', 'Bunty Aur Bubli' and 'Parineeta'. In most key sites, Rang De Basanti was the No. 1 film from all Bollywood and Hollywood titles playing.
In the U.S., the film opened to unprecedented crowds with many having to return disappointed on not getting tickets. The opening figure is USD 701,666 on 61 screens.
