Here is an extract of what the noted magazine 'Time Out London' had to say about 'Viruddh':
When Vidhya (Bachchan) and Sumi's (Tagore) only son Amar (Abraham) is innocently gunned down outside a Mumbai nightclub by a politician’s son, they are shattered. The rest of this somber, songless film follows their quest for justice and the rebuilding of their lives.
This is a rare example of a Bollywood adaptation of a Hollywood film ('In the Bedroom'), which not only works better in an Indian setting but also skillfully expands on the issues raised in the original. Manjrekar addresses cross-cultural love, mortality, loss and redemption whilst leveling criticism against an apparent inept, corrupt system: politicians, the police, and the judiciary. He succeeds largely due to the accomplished performances of his charismatic leads and a script, which retains its focus on the parents' grief. A true Bolly tearjerker. |
