The following article appeared in Australia's Herald Sun:
PREMIER Steve Bracks wants Melbourne to be an outpost of Bollywood, India's giant film and music industry.
And in his bid to make Melbourne the biggest Australian city, Mr. Bracks wants to increase the number of Indian migrants by 30 per cent.
Mr. Bracks was in India this week lobbying the famous Indian director Yash Chopra -- Bollywood's Steven Spielberg -- and executives at Mumbai's Film City, the heart of Bollywood.
Sydney and the Gold Coast claim status as Hollywood outposts.
"The best advertisement for Melbourne and Victoria is the film itself. Bollywood is already in Victoria. There is great potential," Mr. Bracks said from India.
The Indian film company Yash Raj films, which makes six features a year is eyeing Melbourne.
And Mr. Bracks said Chopra was currently making a film, 'Salaam Namaste' (Saif-Preity), in Victoria.
"This is a big budget movie in Bollywood terms and if this is successful, I have no doubt others will follow," Mr. Bracks said. |
