A discussion on the role of the diaspora in Bollywood was the topic
Saturday for the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
After an interesting conversation, which took place between the panel and
a NRI woman, we wonder what conclusions they came to.
The young woman from Colorado found out the hard way that she needed to
learn her ABCs before applying for a job as a Bollywood ambassador. Or
should we say her ABCDs, meaning of course “American Born Confused Desi,
not American Born Confident Desi.” For someone who was so adamant that
she knew everything there was to know about Indian cinema, she made some
embarrassing blunders.
Her first faux pas was to commend the chairman of FICCI's entertainment
committee Yash Chopra for his ‘Devdas’, as it was the best Bollywood film
she had ever seen. If that weren’t enough, after the panel corrected her
saying that ‘Devdas’ was the creation of Sanjay Leela Bhansali not Yash
Chopra, she must have wished the floor would open up and swallow her
whole, as she apologetically but assuredly responded, “I'm sorry, I meant
'Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham' of course."
While most of the delegation was on the floor in laughter by this point,
someone from the back of the room shouted, “That's also not his film! Do
your homework properly first!"
What can we say? Here’s one scene she won’t want to freeze-frame. Maybe
it’s time to fade out... |
