After savouring a masterpiece like Rahman's Jodhaa Akbar, one is bound to feel out of sorts hearing and dissecting Rohit Jugraj's (of James) next, Super Star. The music director is Shamir Tandon, who has been a favourite with Madhur Bhandarkar, having composed for films like Page 3, Corporate and the Kunal Khemu starrer, Traffic Signal. Some lovely songs like 'Kitne Ajeeb Rishte', by Asha Bhonsle and 'O Sikander' come to mind straight away. So let's check out the next offering from Shamir, who we feel, given the right platform, has the potential to deliver the goods.
The first track of the album, 'Ajnabi' showcases his potential, as it is a nice romantic number, with a touch of retro, a style which is in vogue, since the super success of Om Shanti Om. Gentle strumming of the guitar, bead sounds and a luxuriously paced rhythm bordering on rock 'n' roll makes the number a pleasant hearing experience. Contributing to the pleasant experience in a large way is the lead singer Raaj who will definitely carve out a niche for himself as a playback singer in Bollywood. Shamir's use of rock 'n' roll rhythm as the background support is not a very unique idea, having been used in many previous movies (of the bygone era!), but it makes for a pleasant change. The use of mouth organ is nice and the female chorus in the background is in harmony with Raaj's splendid rendition.
Adnan Sami and Sunidhi Chauhan come together for the love duet, 'Don't I Love Or Do I Love U', but have nothing novel to offer. It is a trade mark Adnan Sami number in his typical Garam Masala title track avatar, a style that is becoming monotonous, and the music directors should realize this soon. Too much of a good thing becomes bad/boring after a while! Sunidhi is wasted here as she does not have much to do. A typical hip hop number, complete with rap and Hinglish lyrics by Vibha Singh may appeal to the youth, but certainly does not work in a big way. |
