For the top production house of the Indian film industry, Yash Raj Films, the year 2007 has been a mixed bag of sorts. The year commenced with 'Ta Ra Rum Pum' under-performing. The biggest shocker came with what seemed like a "destined to succeed", 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom', sinking like an anchor, although its music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy proved to be a chartbuster. The banner was rescued by their lucky mascot, Shah Rukh Khan, with 'Chak De! India' breaking records at the box-office. This despite some situational music, which became a hit only after the stupendous success of the movie. With their latest film, 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag' failing at the ticket window, even though its music by Shantanu Moitra was critically and commercially a (moderate) success, much rests on 'Aaja Nachle', Madhuri Dixit's official comeback vehicle. With music by Salim-Sulaiman and lyrics by Jaideep Sahni, (whose last 'Chak De! India' for Yash Raj has gone on to become an anthem for sports lovers, be it cricket matches or hockey, the title track "Chak De" is heard all over the globe), 'Aaja Nachle' seems to be on a friendly pitch. So, let's see if Salim-Sulaiman and Jaideep can do the trick once again for Yash Raj.
Lovely street banjo piece, violin, dholak and tabla beats, along with Sunidhi's sensual "jhanak jhanak" provide the perfect start for the first track of the album, 'Aaja Nachle'. As the title suggests, its a dance number, and since it is picturised on our dancing queen, who is well known for her traditional Bollywood style latkas and jhatkas, this song has all the traditional Indian musical instruments, like the dholak, payal, duff, tabla and even shehnai, which serve to flavour this spicy dance number. This song, specially in the antaras is very much similar in theme and spirit to Madhuri's, 'Chane Ke Khet Mein' from Shah Rukh's Anjaam. Lyrics by Piyush Sharma are at times raunchy, at times cute, striking a good balance, so as not to affect the sensibilities of the family audience and yet keeping the front benchers happy. The queen of item numbers, Sunidhi Chauhan is at her emotive best with perfect voice modulation. A good dance track, just the sort which the fans of Madhuri Dixit expect and love their dancing queen to perform to. |
