Don |
'Don - The Theme' commences with a "Knock, Knock" and then "Who is it?" and SRK replying, "Don!" The arrangements are bereft of too many instruments and it is more of a retro composition. But to the credit of SEL, they have managed to convey the elements of mystery and the unexpected quite effectively. The 'theme' is very apt with a slower 'Main Hoon Don' tune quite perceptible.
Let us now talk about the first 'retained from the original 'Don' number, 'Yeh Mera Dil'. Surprisingly, Sunidhi who normally excels in such numbers begins on a rather dull and flat note. But hold on, that is not the end of the story. Sunidhi pulls up her socks in the 'antras' to give the song, the necessary zing and fuel. But one just wonders why SEL did not go for Asha (who has redone many of her old RD songs). The two obvious reasons can be, to give it a unique-modern sound and also the fact that Sunidhi's youthful voice is much more suited to Kareena. On the whole, SEL have re-orchestrated the song to perfection.
Next, we move on to the hundred percent original SEL composition 'Aaj Ki Raat'. The situational dramatic number, features the leading lady, the male protagonist and the vamp (in the movie). Coming back to the song, it is a superb mindblasting and perhaps the 100-carat gem of 'Don'! The three talented singers Sonu, Alisha and Mahalaxmi are in rocking form as they take 'Aaj Ki Raat' to a different planet altogether with their team effort. Javed Akhtar's lyrics (let us do the formality and say the obvious) are as sharp as a surgeon's scalpel and fit the situation perfectly. At the same time it has his stamp of class - "Aaj ki raat, Hona hai kya, Paana hai kya, Khona hai kya, Do ghadi mein hi yahan, Jaane hoga kya, Jo hamesha tha mera, Phir mera hoga, Kaun kiske dil mein faisla hoga, Faisla hai yahi - Jeet hogi meri, Deewanon ko ab tak nahin hai ye pata."
The song, setting, orchestration and mood get us nostalgic and we are reminded of another gem of a number 'Raat Baqi' from 'Namak Halal'. Hats off to the whole team.
