It's that time of the year when there is a SRK release. This time around it's Shah Rukh's own home production - 'Chalte Chalte'. This Dreamz Unlimited's latest venture was in a lot of talk after Aishwarya Rai, who was supposed to play the lead female role, was replaced by Rani due to the already over-publicized reasons. Another thing (good or bad - you decide) which one hears about 'Chalte Chalte' is that the movie has shades of Saathiya, the recent hit. When it's a Shah Rukh Khan film it's only natural that fans and industry expect a lot from it and needless to say expectations are sky-high from Chalte Chalte too. The buzz is that the movie has turned out to be a winner. Surely, the promos look fresh, and everyone is raving about Rani's look but whether the movie will deliver or not remains to be seen. In the meantime let's check out what Aadesh Shrivastava and Jatin Lalit have to offer us in this soundtrack.
The album opens with the track 'Tauba Tumhare Ishare' sung by Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik. This Jatin Lalit composed track is a perfect combination of good melody and good singing. The lyric by Javed Akhtar is simple and easy on ears. This song has all the ingredients of a hit song and not surprisingly it is already climbing the music charts steadily.
The second track 'Chalte Chalte' is also composed by Jatin Lalit and rendered by Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik. Here the stress is on the melody and a hum able tune. The song has an infectious beat and is easily likeable. Another winner track in the album.
The next track 'Layi Vi Na Gayee' is composed by Aadesh Shrivastava. As soon as the song starts playing you can tell that it is sung by Sukhwinder Singh. The language used in this song is Punjabi and incidentally this is the only song in the album which is not written by Javed Akhtar instead it is written by Pappu Dhillon and Babu Maan. Chances are that even the people who are not quite familiar with Punjabi language will end up liking this song because Singh has sung this song with quite a passion and Aadesh has backed him up with a really melodious tune. A sad and soulful track which will surely become the favorite of many.
'Ghum Shuda' is composed by Aadesh Shrivastava. Sonu Nigam has rendered this song and he sings it with enthusiasm and equal passion. The song is pacy and has a good beat to it. The song has a very A.R. Rahman feel to it, and reminds you of some tunes from his 'Bombay'. Nevertheless a good track.
Next in line is an instrumental version of the title track. The orchestra is good and so are the chorus vocals.
Udit Narayan teams up with Alka Yagnik for 'Dagariya Chalo' which is a fun upbeat track. This track, which is composed by Jatin Lalit, has a decent tune but there is nothing new in the vocal arrangements. Maybe the picturisation would take the song up on a different level.
'Tujhpar Gagan Se' is another song sung by Sukhwinder Singh in this album. Composed by Aadesh Shrivastava, this track can be termed as an out of place track. Sukhwinder sings it in high pitch and at places the song sounds out of synch with the melody. Preeti and Pinky, who accompany Sukhwinder in this song, sound horrible. Definitely the weakest song of the album. You won't miss much if you give this track a skip.
However, the album ends on a good note with 'Suno Na Suno Na' sung by Abhijeet and Chorus. This track, which is composed by Aadesh Shrivastava, has a mushy feel to it. The tempo of the song is more or less like the other songs in the album and while listening to it one has no trouble accepting the track as a part of the album. The singing is up to the mark and the song is thoroughly enjoyable.
On the whole, 'Chalte Chalte' is a mix bag of some really good romantic songs and some rehashed and old worn out tunes. The singing by the lead singers is good. The movie will definitely benefit from the popularity of 'Tauba Tumhare Ishare' and 'Suno Na Suno Na'. Full marks to Jatin Lalit and Aadesh Shrivastava for churning out another album which is worth buying.
