'Blue Umbrella' is based upon Ruskin Bond's story by the same name. The film manages to remain true to the original and retain the essence as well.

In an idyllic, tiny mountain village in North India, an eleven-year-old girl, Biniya (Shreya Sharma) gets a strikingly beautiful umbrella. She goes about her village showing off her possessions to all and sundry, but rebukes offers of others who are interested in that very umbrella. Also, interested in the blue umbrella is Nandu Khatri (Pankaj Kapur), a miser, who runs a small shop in the village. Biniya is shattered when one day she finds her umbrella stolen. She suspects Nandu and gets his shop-cum-house searched by the police. They find zilch. A humiliated Nandu gets an umbrella of his own...a vibrant red one and soon gains tremendous respect from the villagers.

Pankaj Kapur gives a stellar performance yet again and consolidates his position as one of the best actors in the country today. Newcomer Shreya Sharma also holds her own in spite of being pit against a veteran like Kapur. The cinematography is good but the editing bogs down the pace.

Shot amidst picturesque settings, this film is sure to bring a smile to one's face. Though 'Blue Umbrella' might not exactly set the box office on fire, it definitely is an engaging fare.
