Produced by Cineyug and directed by E. Niwas, 'Dum' is the remake of Tamil film 'Dhill', which in turn was a remake of Malayalam film called 'Kireedam', starring Mohanlal.
Dum revolves around two principal characters - Uday Shinde (Vivek Oberoi), an ordinary citizen who aspires to become a police officer and serve his country and Encounter Shankar (Atul Kulkarni), a corrupt police officer who uses the power of his uniform for deviously selfish intentions.
Life takes a steep turn for Uday and his girlfriend Kaveri (Diya Mirza) when they come across a man who is not ashamed to pee in public. When Kaveri humiliates the man for his indecent act, the man turns all his fury on her, the altercation ending in Uday giving the man a sound beating. Uday realizes the enormity of his action, when he learns that the man he had taken on was 'Encounter' Shanker the sadistic and the most feared cop in the police force. Uday now has to pit his wits against not only Shanker, but also an unscrupulous politician and a professional killer like Babu Kasai whom Shanker hires to kill Uday's family. Uday finds his family intimidated, his girl friend arrested and his childhood friend (Sushant Singh) killed. Uday who had come very near to realizing his ambition of joining the police force now finds his very existence in jeopardy. However, Uday has 'Dum' or guts to stand up against the man, and finally beat him at his own game. Helping him at times is an upright police inspector (Mukesh Rishi) who had been one of the victims of Shanker's sadism.
