Sohail Khan was destined to be an actor. For, who will not love to be on the screen if he has great looks, attractive physique and above all, two actor brothers? Maine Dil Tujhko Diya marks his debut as a hero. But unfortunately, this film leaves no impact on the viewer and Sohail fails as a writer and director, though he succeeds a bit as an actor.
MDTD is a love story revolving about a college guy Ajay (Sohail Khan) and a girl Ayesha (Sameera Reddy). Ajay is a senior student who, along with his few friends, runs a group called Aryans. These guys are taking care of college security, forget the fact that they should be studying and not playing guards. Ayesha is introduced to Ajay by a professor (Neeraj Vora) who tells the guy to look after her. For what?
Ayesha and Ajay come closer and they fall in love. How, please ask us. It's natural that they are college students and so is natural to have an annual show for a Hindi film. Ayesha participates in it and during the rehearsals, Ajay saves her dignity from Warriors, the rival group of Aryans. And when she fails to sing a line on the stage on the D-day, Ajay joins her without hesitation! Love is in the air, friends.
But not for Verma (Kabir Bedi), Ayesha's father and Chopra (Dalip Tahil), his business associate. Verma is among the rich and famous of the city and he wants his daughter to marry a guy from a rich family. Chopra has plans to get Ayesha married to his son (Raja) so that he can confiscate Verma's property. On realizing that the girl is going gaga about an orphan called Ajay, Chopra plays the Bhaijaan (Sanjay Dutt) card. Bhaijaan and his henchmen Chhote (Sarfaraz Khan) and Munna (Rajpal Yadav) are dreaded goons and Chopra wants them to teach Ajay a lesson.
Now, Bhaijaan never takes an assignment where an Aashiq is involved because he lost his younger brother who loved somebody. Bhaijaan always wants to help lovers and not the other way around. But, situations occur unexpectedly resulting into personal rivalry twixt Bhaijaan and Ajay. Then begins the final countdown where Bhaijaan swears to terminate Ajay soon after Chaand Mubarak, where Ajay dares Verma that he will marry Ayesha before the latter succeeds in tying her knot with someone else and...
MDTD has more flips than one could have expected from such a hyped movie. Consider these: A member of Aryans group is always spotted boozing even when he is in the college campus. Though the movie is all about college and students, at least in the first half, you don't see a single classroom scene or even a book or two. Ajay and Ayesha are, it's very obvious to understand, studying in a Mumbai college but they play rugby! True, the rugby match sequence is quite interesting but why the director didn't use any other game that is played in India? There is no reason given as to why Munna comes to the college.
MDTD is a routine love story with nothing new to offer. What's more, it fails on many other counts than writing. Kabir Lal's cinematography is above par. Editing by Yusuf Khan could have been better as the length of the movie is too long to digest. Action by Amin Ghani is good and some scenes become interesting due to this. However, the director could have avoided using slow motions too frequently. Choreography by Raju Khan, Farah Khan and Ganesh Hegde is average. Musically, Daboo Malik has come up with yet another soulful score and 'Thoda sa pyaar hua hai', 'Sha na na', 'Kuchh bhi nahin' and the title track are better ones.
Performance wise, Sohail Khan looks good though he has strikingly resembling features to Salman and Arbaaz Khan. He does well in action scenes but fails enliven other moments. Sohail actually needs to improve his dialogue delivery and physical movements. Sameera Reddy is just about okay and she will have to learn a lot to become a happening girl. Sanjay Dutt has got a cameo and he does justice to that. In entry scene and during the pre-climax, he rules the screen. Of others, Rajpal Yadav is of first rate.
MDTD is another average film from Sohail as a director. He should concentrate more of the script writing before making a movie as in case of this film, everything goes wrong due to the weakness of writing. Certainly a passable movie. |
