Some movies become immortal even while they are in the making. And when it has a one of the most loved subjects of all the time and a director who is known for making films from heart and not mind, they are bound to be as great as one can expect them to be. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s third film Devdas in one such film that the expectations of both critics and viewers. Surmounted over the never heard budget of Rs. 50 plus crore, Devdas is a memorable screen experience for all.

It is a story of Devdas (Shah Rukh Khan), his love Parvati aka Paro (Aishwarya Rai) and a danseuse Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Paro is the daughter of Sumitra (Kiron Kher) and her family live in a house next to Devdas’ home, which is the richest family of Tal Sonapur. Since his or her childhood, Devdas and Paro share great chemistry, which can be envied by anyone.

Bhansali’s film, however, begins when young Devdas is all set to come back from London after completing higher education. He had left Tal Sonapur when he was in his teenage but his feelings for Paro have never decreased during all the years. Paro on the other hand is also equally excited about Devdas’ home coming. In fact, she had lit a lamp (diyaa) when which she has considered as symbol of her love for Devdas. This lamp is burning even after years of separation.

While Devdas’ mother Kaushalya (Smita Jaykar) and other family members (Ananya Khare, Manoj Joshi) are waiting for tonga to come from the station with Devdas, he gets down on the way and meets his Paro first. Sumitra’s desire is to marry Paro with Devdas and she understands the sublime relationship of her daughter with the man. But, Kaushalya who believes that Paro, the daughter from a poor family, is not suitable for her son thwarts her wish. Devdas’ family is superior both in social and financial terms to Paro’s family.

When Kaushalya insults Sumitra in front of guests during a family function, the former, out of her frustration, arranges her daughter’s quick marriage with an aged landlord Bhuvan Chaudhary (Vijayendra Ghatge) who is richer and more influential than Devdas’ father. Paro do not like this but she is an obedient daughter and so, she surrender to mother’s wish without any objection.

This leaves Paro in a state trauma because she cannot think of loving anyone else but Devdas. Devdas, on the other hand, is isolated and to find some respite, he starts boozing heavily after becoming friends with one Chunnilal (Jackie Shroff). This man’s friendship takes Devdas to village’s most sought after courtesan Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit). Devdas wants to forget Paro with the help of alcohol while Chandramukhi, who has seen innumerable men in her life, is mesmerized by Devdas’ passionate love for Paro. She falls in love with Devdas who gives a dime to her feelings.

Alcoholism slowly starts taking toll of Devdas’ health. Chandramukhi wishes to bring him to normalcy but he just cannot think of loving anyone else. Meanwhile, while destiny had given Devdas a chance to meet Paro after she is married, he had promised her that he would meet her before the last breath. And that gloomy moment arrives sooner than expected...
